Ernest has authored or coauthored 18 books, including two guidebooks ("Canoeing Mississippi" and "Canoeing Louisiana") and a downriver adventure travel narrative ("Paddling the Pascagoula," coauthored with Scott B. Williams). His latest book is "Paddleways of Mississippi," coauthored with Patrick Parker. Herndon is longtime outdoors editor at the McComb, MS, Enterprise-Journal. He has won dozens of journalism awards, and written numerous magazine articles. He is a world traveler, having canoed, hiked, and camped in such diverse places as Papua New Guinea, Alaska, Thailand, Myanmar, Haiti, and Central America, as well as all over North America. But he most enjoys staying close to his home in rural southwest Mississippi, where he works in his garden, tromps the woods, and plays banjo and other instruments in two bluegrass-gospel groups. Ernest is married with one son and two grandchildren. His wife Angelyn is a retired schoolteacher with 28 years service.
