Dr. Stanley Andrisse

Dr. Stanley Andrisse, PhD, is an endocrinologist, tenured professor, author, and nationally recognized advocate for education and criminal justice reform. He is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Howard University College of Medicine, where his research focuses on diabetes, metabolic disease, and health disparities affecting underserved communities.

Dr. Andrisse's personal journey is central to his work and advocacy. After being incarcerated as a young man, he transformed his life through education, ultimately earning his PhD in Endocrinology and Metabolism from Saint Louis University. His lived experience as a formerly incarcerated scholar informs his commitment to expanding access to higher education for justice-impacted individuals and challenging systemic barriers that limit opportunity.

He is the founder and executive director of From Prison Cells to PhD, a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing educational access, mentorship, and reentry pathways for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals. Through this work, he partners with universities, correctional institutions, and policymakers to expand prison education programs and promote equity in higher education.

Dr. Andrisse is also the author of Breaking Chains, Building Futures: Pathways to Redemption, Education, and Excellence, a memoir that chronicles his journey from incarceration to academia and highlights the transformative power of education.

His work has been featured in national media outlets and academic forums, and he is a sought-after speaker on topics including resilience, education equity, public health, and criminal justice reform.
