Alan is a journalist and author of five nonfiction books: Ten Point; Mississippi in Africa; Sultana; We’re With Nobody (with Michael Rejebian); and Here I am. He has contributed to The Atlantic, the Columbia Journalism Review, Forbes, the Los Angeles Times,the New York Times, Smithsonian, Vice, the Washington Post, and numerous other publications. He maintains a Substack, Alan Huffman’s What Happened, about stories that fall through the cracks of conventional news.
He has worked as an opposition researcher and as a freelance editor for the Committee to Protect Journalists, the International Business Times, The Mississippi Independent, and Vanity Fair. He coedited Lines Were Drawn, a nonfiction anthology about high school integration in Jackson, Mississippi.
Public appearances have included “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” NPR and various affiliate programs (including “All Things Considered” and “Morning Edition”), CNN, Fox News, PBS,Sirius XM, and other radio, TV and online outlets. He will host the upcoming podcast “Hidden Mirrors,” about an inmate book club at Mississippi’s Wilkinson County Correctional Facility(scheduled to launch in October 2025). He is currently working on a nonfiction book of crime stories set in the Deep South.
